Audiences and Institutions: Woman in Black

Who do you think the primary and secondary target audience is for The Woman in Black? Why?

The primary target audience for The Woman in Black is teenage Daniel Radcliffe fans and general horror fans. I believe this to be the case because the whole teaser campaign heavily focused on Daniel Radcliffe playing the lead role. The posters also feature Radcliffe as the main subject with his name typed fairly large. His name is also the only cast member name to be displayed out of the billing block. The secondary target audience is film fanatics due to their advertising through media forms such as Film 4 and Total Film.

How was The Woman in Black marketed?

The Woman in Black was marketed through a number of media platforms in order to attract the target audience. These included advertising on TV, in magazines and online. Ad breaks on channels such as E4, Horror Channel and between programs such as Hollyoaks, were used to get the attention of the primary target audience of teenage Radcliffe and horror fans. The marketing also saw adverts being placed in magazines popular among teenagers such as NME and FHM. Daniel Radcliffe took advantage of web 2.0 to attract fans of his to see the film. Through YouTube he created a number of videos talking about the film. The campaign for this film was done on a massive scale with advertising reaching large numbers of people.

Do you think the marketing materials for the film were appropriate? Why?
What kind of release did the film have?

The marketing materials used for this film are appropriate to the production as they successfully target the intended audience of teenage Harry Potter/Daniel Radcliffe fans and horror fans. It was also marketed a lot through social networking which enabled to get the attention of mainly teenagers which was their intended audience, with a very low age certificate for a horror film of 12.

How much did The Woman in Black cost to make? (Production budget) AND what was the industry impact of The Woman in Black? (Think box office and trends).

The Woman in Black cost approximately £10.5 million, which, as films nowadays go, isn't a massive production budget. Despite this fact the film still managed to become a massive hit around the world. This film had an impact on the industry with it becoming the most successful British horror at UK box office. The film managed to make £14 million three weeks after it was released. In the US it managed to create $50 million in just 25 days.

Why do you think the film was so successful?

I believe the film was so successful because of the huge marketing campaign that came before the actual film. There were teaser posters and trailers, then the full posters and trailers, and also interviews. Another reason I think that the film was so successful is the amount of time and effect Daniel Radcliffe put into promoting the film through doing interviews and web chats. This meant that a lot of people were talking about the film.
